Afreen Seher Gandhi

Afreen Seher is a Theatre Practitioner with special interests in South Asian Performing Arts, Film and Culture. She has served as an Assistant Professor at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture (IVS) and was the first woman to Head the Theatre Arts Department at the National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA). Afreen graduated with highest honors in Theatre from Smith College (Massachusetts, USA) with an emphasis on Directing and Scriptwriting and she has a Master’s degree in Mass Communication with a focus in Film and Digital Media. Her documentary film on Pakistani women practicing Theatre, Aman Khel premiered at the Women of Colour Conference in 2018 held in the United States.

Afreen is a recipient of the Ruth Dietrich Tuttle Prize for Peace and is the Pakistan Project Lead and Artistic Director on the Awaaz Audio Theatre revival project (2025) which developed three original audio plays released and available for free streaming in over 120 countries. She has spearheaded the first Women's Performing Arts Festival and Original Playwrights' Festival at Napa and organized the IVS Theatre Residency in collaboration with the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP).

Afreen’s original play, Madoom is an interdisciplinary multimedia theatre production that focuses on environmental justice, animal rights and climate change and was staged at the Annual CFO conference hosted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP) in 2024.

Some of the renowned plays Afreen has performed in, include Shakespeare's Macbeth, Khurram Ali Shafiq's musical MantoRama, Vijay Tendulkar's Kamala, Donald Margulies' Collected Stories, and Intizar Hussain's Saatwaan Sawaal. Her creative practice tries to bring the stage and screen together and research interests lie in the intersection between theory and performance. Afreen now runs a Performing Arts Collective and is the Managing Director at Kefiyat Productions

Sammul is an inspiring story of a young girl from Balochistan who dares to reimagine her father’s clay pottery tradition through modern creativity, photography, and online entrepreneurship. Rooted in Pakistani- Baloch culture, Sammul celebrates dreams, heritage, and the courage it takes to stand by what you believe in—even when the world resists.
