Sabiha Zaman

Sabiha Zaman defines grit and passion. Growing up in a society where women were not allowed to pursue education or professional careers, she defied societal norms to pursue her love for nature conservation. Her commitment to conservation led her to work as a Senior Field Assistant at WWF-Pakistan, an organization she has been associated with since 1997.

Despite facing resistance from her family, Sabiha persisted in pursuing her interests. She joined WWF-Pakistan's team and worked on various impactful projects, including the Ethno-botany project, the Common Leopard project, and the Water Stewardship project. Through these projects, she learned about fieldwork and community-related activities and became an expert in identifying the plant species of Ayubia National Park and recalling their scientific names.

Sabiha’s work also involved extensive travel. Despite that being a personal hardship for her, it did not deter her from pursuing what she loved doing.

Sabiha's dedication to nature conservation did not go unnoticed. In 2000, she was awarded the Falcon Foundation Award for Conservation, which recognized her contributions to the organization's projects in the Ayubia National Park. Sabiha's passion for her work continued to earn her recognition, and in 2017, on the 70th Independence Day of Pakistan, she received an award for her contributions towards the cause of climate change at the Pakistan Women's Festival.

Sabiha's tireless efforts have also had a positive impact on the community. Through her work, she has influenced a significant change in the mindset of the locals towards conservation and the critical role of women in this work. People are now willing to educate their children and work with organizations like WWF-Pakistan to preserve natural resources and take part in conservation efforts.

Sabiha is currently working with WWF-Pakistan and engaging communities in Nathiagali on water conservation, replenishment and stewardship. She is an inspiration to women in Pakistan and around the world who aspire to pursue their dreams, which makes her our hero - Face of Conservation.
