As Pakistan has been ravaged by the most devastating monsoons in its recent history, followed by apocalyptic riverine floods, and several communities are still underwater months later, we want to utilize the festival structure to begin to lay the ground for how we can come together to address the intersecting crises of environmental justice, social inequity and gender rights by rebuilding community power to reflect, learn, effect narrative change and to heal.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The theme builds upon ideas of communities of care and imagines ways to build back better, strengthen bonds, heal wounds, find joy and salvage the earth we walk on. We want to intentionally build and nurture each other within a framework of radical love for community and acceptance of the fact that lack of access to community infrastructure and age-old cultural norms and traditions that once united humans and natures breeds desolation. The values of the festival will be shaped by the need to cultivate deep relationships with people across traditionally gated and guarded spaces and with acknowledgement of the role of all living things: plants, animals and other parts of our local heritage and ecosystems. Within these parameters we will also ask ourselves, what are the challenges to forming a community and leading from a place of radical empathy? What can a community look like without “cancel culture” and what does restorative justice actually look like in practice?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Tazeen Bari is a documentary filmmaker who has been directing and producing documentaries in Pakistan for over 10 years. Her documentaries include \u201cThe Valleys Our Ancestors Chose\u201d , \u201cLetters From Death Row\u201d acquired by Al Jazeera for Witness, \u201cVote for X\u201d, \u201cQandeel\u201d released by Guardian documentaries and an episode for the Emmy Nominated Vice series WOMAN with Gloria Steinem. Sarwat Gilani has worked in numerous television plays, web series, films and graced Pakistani screens for almost two decades. She is also an artist and has participated in various international art exhibitions as an advocate of women\u2019s rights and speaks against child abuse at different platforms nationwide. She is an ambassador for many causes like Special Olympics Pakistan, Indus Hospital health network and UN polio drive. She is a proud owner of her new business venture named Art House, an inclusive after school space for children that encourages creative learning through a variety of programs and activities for differently abled, less privileged and main stream children.

Haya Fatima Iqbal is an Academy and two-time Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker. She directs, produces, and lenses films across Pakistan. Haya is a Global Media Makers Fellow, an Acumen fellow and a Fulbright alum. She holds a Masters in News & Documentary from New York University. Haya is an Assistant Professor of Practice at Habib University, and also trains people in storytelling and filmmaking internationally. Whether formally crowned or dethroned, Rani is a leader. She\u2019s taken many forms in the past – a rebel, a recluse, a reformer. She rehabilitates & rejuvenates. She is the source of love & life but is sometimes voiceless & unseen. Rani is equal parts romance & revolt; leadership & lore. There is no doubt that she captures popular imagination.<\/p>

It is within this context that Rani, that age-old figure of power has existed within & despite frameworks of inequality and injustice that continue to haunt our realities, is provocative as we reclaim the power of the vernacular and its historic status, as well as wistful, in terms of both what was and what can be. In Urdu, Rani is the Queen Regent, not one who lays claim or usurps but rather one from whom energy & strength flows outward. She is the life force and feminine energy of the earth. In South Asian idiom, Rani evokes many images and forms: from Raat ki Rani (a fragrant night blooming jasmine) to Bitya Rani (a daughter who is the Queen of her parents’ heart) to Jhansi ki Rani (a powerful historic figure who played an important role in defying colonial powers), she is the matriarch as well as the romantic female form in poetry, art and songs.

Equally, the theme shines lights on thousands of invisible & forgotten women in our country. Ranis in their life-giving and nurturing status but underappreciated & uncredited for their profound influence on family & community life. Too many women have historically been excluded from the mainstream & to continue to paint a picture of the world in which they are not centered does us all a disservice.
